From March–August every year, SBWCN receives an influx of patients that coincides with the breeding and nesting seasons for local wildlife. Most of the animals that arrive are babies, nestlings, infants, or juveniles who can not survive on their own. They range from newborn opossums to hummingbird hatchlings, but the goal is always the same: to give them a safe space to heal and grow up until they’re able to be released back into the wild. By joining the Baby Season Fund Drive, you are directly supporting the care of thousands of orphaned and injured baby animals.
Wildlife Baby Season is an enormous effort every year! With your support, we can continue giving baby animals a second chance at a wild life.

FAQ

If you discover a baby animal, it's essential to assess the situation carefully. Not all young animals found alone are orphaned or in need of assistance. Often, their parents are nearby and will return once it's safe.
Before intervening, consult SBWCN's guides for baby mammals and baby birds to determine the appropriate action.
If you're still uncertain, contact SBWCN's HELPLine at (805) 681-1080 for guidance.

To support wildlife during this critical period, consider the following tips:
Delay Tree and Bush Trimming: Postpone trimming trees and bushes, as well as cleaning wood and leaf piles, until September through December to avoid disturbing nesting sites.
Keep Pets Supervised: Monitor your pets to ensure they do not disturb or harm nesting babies or their parents.
Avoid Rodenticides and Glue Traps: These can harm not only rodents but also predators that feed on them, impacting the entire food chain.
Properly Dispose of Food Waste: Leaving pet or human food outside can attract wildlife, leading to potential conflicts.
Use Window Decals: To prevent bird collisions, place decals on large windows.
Plant Native Species: Cultivating native plants in your garden supports local wildlife by providing natural food sources and habitats.
